The purpose of this guide is to accelerate your professional development by applying "self-coaching" techniques. There will be many situations in your career where you would benefit from a professional coach, mentor or skilled manager. When individuals such as these are not available, as will often be the case, you can employ the approaches outlined in this guide. We strongly recommend that before completing this guide, you first read the companion article Can You Coach Yourself?

Self-Coaching Model - This model offers a sequential process for addressing career development needs.

  1. Identify the change that will provide the most impact in your work.

  2. Plan for gaining or improving the skill.

  3. Select someone to give you feedback on your progress.

  4. Implement the plan initially in low risk situations.

  5. Receive feedback on your execution.

  6. Apply the skill as often as possible.

1. Identify a situation where you want to develop:

Consequences of not taking action? What price will you pay if you maintain the status quo or take no positive action? (Be as specific)

Benefits of resolving this situation? What personal benefits would you gain as a result of a positive change in this situation?

2. Plan for improving the skill or behavior.

Resources for self-coaching - These resources generally fall into the following categories. Select the category that you prefer for self-coaching.

3. Select a Performance Feedback Provider. Selecting someone to give you feedback on your progress can enhance the self-coaching process.

4. Implement. Where and when will you implement a low risk action or conversation that contributes to your development in the selected area?

5. Receive feedback on your execution. What feedback did you receive? What changes will you make as a result of this feedback?

6. Apply the skill as often as possible. Make a note of the situations where you successfully applied the plan.
