Coaching Tip:
Getting the Coaching You Need
The Flip Side of the
Coaching Coin
The executives in your organization are receiving coaching from outside professionals but what about you? How do you get the coaching you need for yourself? The focus of this article is how to get coaching from your manager or another senior person in your organization. When approached properly, most people will be happy to help you with work related issues. Keep in mind that your manager is not a professional coach and will require some guidance from you regarding your needs and expectations. The following tips are designed to help you in the process of getting the coaching you need.
-
Don't expect your manager to always know when you need coaching. Take responsibility for getting the information you need.
-
Determine, as specifically as possible, what you would like the focus of your conversation to be. Is this an area where your manager has expertise? If not, who else could you approach?
-
Be clear about your expectations. Do you want your manager to solve a problem you are struggling with? Do you just want him or her to be a sounding board? Do you want assistance in exploring options? Make sure you articulate your expectations to your manager.
-
Be prepared to tell your manager how you have tried to work the issue or solve the problem in question. Don't use him or her as the initial resource for resolving work challenges. Give it your all first, and then seek coaching.
-
Be sensitive to your manager's workload and schedule. Whenever possible, make an appointment that is convenient for him or her. Ask for a specific amount of time and stick to the time agreed.
-
Follow-up with your manager regarding how you implemented his or her coaching. It is important to your manager to know that his or her advice was put to good use.
The flip side of the coaching coin includes the proactive measures you take to get the coaching you need. What are you waiting for? Go get the coaching you need!
