Coaching Tip:
Presenting to Attila
A subscriber to Management Challenges requested help with the following situation:
My organization has an executive we all refer to as "Attila." His short temper, sarcasm, and explosiveness are legendary. I am scheduled to deliver a presentation to this individual and his staff in two weeks. What advice can you give me?
This type of situation requires some old-fashioned detective work. Find out the positive and negative "hot buttons" that are critical to "Attila." Seek out people who have presented to him and pick their brains. In particular, focus on Presentation Style, Content and AV Equipment.
-
Presentation Style: Which style works best with Attila? Does he prefer a presentation style that is strong and forceful, collegial or brief and to the point? Talk to those individuals who do well in presenting to him.
-
Content: How much detail does Attila prefer? Will he respond well to evidence from other organizations in your industry? Does he want minimum use of slides or many slides loaded with data? Are there topics you should stay away from? What sets him off?
-
AV Equipment: If he hates PowerPoint, for goodness sake, don't use it. Find out in advance if he has any idiosyncrasies such as turning off all the room lights during presentations. As with any presentation, arrive early and make sure the equipment works.
Remember, there are always some people who do well with this type of person. Learn and profit from their experience and you will become known as someone who handles Attila with poise and effectiveness.
