How to Succeed as a Protégé in a Corporate Mentor Program

Question

I'm a financial analyst in a large technology company. A few days ago I received an email from the human resources department informing me that I had been selected to be a protégé in a new company mentor program. The email went on to state that I had been matched with a senior manager who would serve as my mentor. I was instructed to call my mentor to set up a meeting regarding the program. What advice can you give me on maximizing my participation in this program? I'm really in the dark about what to expect or how to behave as a protégé.

Congratulations on being selected for your organization's mentor program. While the initial communications leave something to be desired, being selected is certainly a feather in your cap. Progressive organizations are learning that mentor programs are one of the most effective ways to develop managers and high-potential employees

My advice is that you take responsibility for your first meeting with your mentor. Be prepared to give the mentor a two-minute summary of your background. Bring along a list of your professional goals, education plans and long-term career aspirations. Research the mentor's background. What is he or she best known for throughout the organization? Try to determine why you were matched with this person.

The following are questions to ask your mentor in your first meeting.

It may turn out that you don't need to use this preparation. You and your mentor may have instant rapport and a natural flow of communication may develop. However, if this is not the case, you will be ready to make the most of your first meeting with your mentor and hopefully a long-term relationship will develop.
