Ask The Coach:
Leading in Difficult Times
Question
My company is going through a large reorganization and a fair amount of turmoil. As a manager, how do I project a positive attitude without looking like a Pollyanna during these difficult times?
The Coach Answers . . .
Employees look to their managers for leadership in difficult times. This is a challenging responsibility because you are not immune to the stress and uncertainty that others are experiencing.
There are three things you can do to help employees cope during this difficult period:
- Provide Frequent Communication
Fear of the unknown often impacts the motivation and productivity of employees. Most of us would rather hear bad news than to be kept waiting over a protracted period of time without any news. The uncertainty wears us down and creates great anxiety. Meet regularly with your employees and bring them up-to-date on the status of the reorganization. Request that the next level of management meet with your department periodically to discuss the changes that will be taking place.
- Keep the Focus on Task Accomplishment
Review plans, objectives and goals with employees on an ongoing basis. Remind people of the contribution they are making, even during difficult times. It is easy to get off task when things are stressful. However, positive accomplishment can be a great antidote.
- Get Support for Yourself
To stay resilient during times of rapid change requires that you take care of yourself. Make sure you request updates from your manager on the status of the reorganization. Get together with colleagues both inside your organization and in your external network. These discussions will help you keep a healthy perspective on the situation. Draw on your arsenal of stress-busters. Don't neglect exercise and time with your family during these stressful times.
Successful management requires delivering results during good times and bad. Keep employees informed, help them focus on task accomplishment and take care of yourself.
